The Technical University of Cologne - TH Cologne for short - sees itself as a University of Technology, Arts, Sciences. With its disciplinary and cultural diversity and openness, it shapes social innovation and makes substantial contributions to solving societal challenges. We form a community of teachers and learners and see ourselves as a learning organization that breaks new ground. For example, the TH Köln is one of the pioneers nationwide in the development and design of new university didactic concepts.
The range of subjects includes the areas of applied natural sciences; architecture and construction; Information and communication; computer science; Engineering; Culture, society and social affairs as well as economy. In addition to the full-time model, the more than 50 bachelor's and 50 master's courses also offer the possibility of dual or part-time studies.
TH Köln is system-accredited; it has proven that it has a reliable internal quality management system for studies and teaching that ensures the qualification goals and quality standards of the courses.
As a place for research-based learning and scientific education, the university also promotes young scientists through cooperative doctoral projects. Around 6,500 students begin their studies at TH Köln every year. A total of around 25,000 students from around 120 countries contribute their potential together with 440 professors and a further 1,600 employees.
Research focuses on future issues such as climate change, energy supply, food security and demographic change; in the development of solution strategies and the design of the most important questions of the time, the researchers contribute their specialist expertise in interdisciplinary interaction. They work closely with local, national and international partners, including 290 universities abroad. The university offers its researchers an attractive working environment. With the "HR Excellence in Research" seal of quality, the EU Commission confirms international standards in personnel development for TH Köln.
The TH Köln also makes full use of its quality in academic further education and promotes the skills and personal and professional development of those interested in further education, those in employment and those returning to work in various programmes. The quality management of scientific training is certified according to DIN ISO 9001 and ISO 29990 (learning services for training and further education).
Not only in the German higher education area, but also internationally, we maintain close relationships with other universities. Together with our around 352 partner universities abroad , we offer a wide range of stays abroad and funding opportunities and support student mobility . Several master’s courses are offered entirely in English. A third of the students from abroad come from overseas: from Africa, America, Asia or Australia.
We belong to the UAS7, the association of seven high-performing universities of applied sciences in Germany and are also a full member of the European University Association (EUA).
Corporate Social Responsibility is also no stranger to us: We are certified as a family-friendly university and an environmentally oriented institution tested according to the European eco-management guidelines EMAS and ISO 14001. TH Köln has joined the European initiative EURAXESS - Researchers in Motion.
TH Köln has locations in Cologne, Gummersbach and Leverkusen.
Shaping social innovation is an essential guiding principle of our teaching. Therefore, as a university, we take up questions from the area of (major) societal challenges in research-based learning approaches. Our students develop ideas for the transfer of knowledge and products into practice. In this way, they develop an academic habitus that extends beyond their time at the university, which enables them to actively and responsibly help shape society.
In the 'scientific exploration of the world', teachers and students become partners in the educational process. Studying at TH Köln means learning in projects that arouse curiosity and interest and stimulate sustainable learning processes. Already during their studies, students experience scenarios of their future professional action situations. Through targeted advice and open learning approaches, we promote the diversity of our students and thus contribute to more educational equity.
Counseling at TH Köln is an offer to prospective students and university members in all phases of education and employment. The range of topics is far-reaching: from passing on information to answering open questions to clarifying diverse and complex counseling issues. The formats range from 'door and hinge talks' to consultation hours and psychosocial counseling in counseling centres.
As a learning university, we understand quality as a continuous improvement process. We support this quality development with a process-oriented, integrated quality management system. To ensure quality in teaching and studying, we use a wide range of instruments that are constantly being further developed.
The quality assurance procedures that are carried out regularly support the TH Köln in the implementation of its strategic objectives in the areas of teaching and studying. They serve to ensure university-wide standards in the development and implementation of degree programs.
In addition, they continuously reflect on the status quo in terms of teaching, studies and study conditions in order to:
The process of quality assurance for existing and new degree programs at TH Köln maps the development process of a degree program from the initial idea through its development and going through the internal approval process to its further development or even closure. This cycle makes it clear which actors take which steps at which points on the basis of which decision-making bases and criteria in order to develop, promote and ensure quality in teaching and studying.
Accreditation procedures control the admission of courses for study operations on the basis of defined quality standards. After its system accreditation, which was completed without any conditions, the TH Köln now decides independently on the admission of its courses. Previously, all degree programs at TH Köln had often successfully completed multiple program accreditation procedures.
System accreditation enables us to link the approval, review and development of our (existing or newly designed) degree programs directly with the implementation of our strategic guidelines for teaching and studying as well as other profile elements of our university. At the same time, this gives us the opportunity to continuously advance the quality development of our range of courses and not to focus on a 6-year test cycle (as in program accreditation): We expect more sustainable progress and improvements from this.
Cooperative courses will continue to be certified at TH Köln via program accreditation. Since such cooperations often have to be adapted to the specifics of other countries, this procedure enables greater flexibility in the design of the cooperation. However, there is also the possibility here, especially with a view to cooperation with other universities in Germany, to go through the accreditation procedure of the TH Köln established as part of the system accreditation upon application.
Kindly check the requirenments as per the course selected.
There are 90 student halls of residence and 4,900 places in halls of residence. The Kölner Studierendenwerk (KSTW) is responsible for the administration and allocation of these dormitories.
Most halls of residence offer you rooms in shared flats, the so-called WGs. There are also rooms that have a shared kitchen or bathroom in the hallway. The small apartments and family apartments for students with children are popular and therefore rather difficult to get in the halls of residence. The Kölner Studierendenwerk also rents out housing suitable for the disabled.
Please don't be fooled by the seemingly high number of places in the halls of residence. The Kölner Studierendenwerk is open to all students at the Cologne universities - not just for the TH Köln. The demand is accordingly very high. Therefore, apply for a place in a hall of residence at the Kölner Studierendenwerk as early as possible. You do not need admission to a degree program for this. The waiting time can be up to 6 months or longer.
The Kölner Studierendenwerk operates three halls of residence on the Gummersbach campus. A dormitory is right in the center next to the campus. The demand for a room is very high there and the probability of getting a place is lower than in the other two halls of residence. In general, the dormitories in Gummersbach are very popular.
In Opladen, the Kölner Studierendenwerk runs a dormitory with small apartments or shared rooms. Please note that demand for this dormitory is very high.
Please note that the rooms in the student dormitories of the Kölner Studierendenwerk are not provided by TH Köln.
Private Student Halls of residence is available but
these dormitories are more expensive, but they come with a higher service package and more modern equipment.
Please note that TH Köln does not offer room services in private student dormitories.
Lately it has happened again and again that scammers offer housing and room offers on the well-known internet portals.
In such a case, the scammers demand a deposit of one to two months' rent, which must be transferred to an account in advance. The scammers promise to send the apartment key by post because they supposedly do not live in Cologne.
Please never transfer money to unknown people with whom you have only communicated via the internet. If you fall for such a fake offer, you will probably never see your money again.
We therefore recommend that all students visit the apartments in person. It is advisable to arrive early so that you have enough time to find an apartment on the spot.
TO GET IN TOUCH
We recommend that you make the first contact over the phone as soon as possible and directly.
If written contact is desired, then write a friendly cover letter. Briefly write something about yourself: your name, where you come from, what and where you study, how your income is secured, etc. Don't forget to leave your contact details.
In the case of an advertisement for a room in a shared flat, it is advisable to read the advertisement text carefully. See if you have any common interests, hobbies, or anything else in common. If so, then they pick it up when they make contact or when they later inspect the room. In this way you can collect a few sympathy points from your roommates.
While looking for an apartment, you might stumble across acronyms that can make your life difficult if you don't know what they mean. In the information box you will therefore find a leaflet with the basic ABCs of looking for an apartment.
