The University of Leeds is a public research university in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was established in 1874 as the Yorkshire College of Science. In 1884 it merged with the Leeds School of Medicine established 1831 and was renamed Yorkshire College. It became part of the federal Victoria University in 1887, joining Owens College which became the University of Manchester and University College Liverpool (which became the University of Liverpool. In 1903 a royal charter was granted to the University of Leeds by King Edward VII.

For 2017-18 Leeds is ranked nationally between 10th Times and Sunday Times and 14th The Guardian; The Complete University Guide.The university is ranked as the 31st best in Europe and was ranked 93rd in the QS World University Rankings for 2019. Leeds was ranked in the top three in the UK and the top 20 in the world for graduate employability QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2016, and it was also ranked as the fifth most targeted British university by the UK's top graduate employers in 2016-17.Leeds was ranked 10th in the UK for research power in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the best result in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. The university was named the 2017 Sunday Times University of the Year, having been runner-up in 2016.

The university has 33,300 students, the fifth largest university in the UK out of 167. From 2006 to present, the university has consistently been ranked within the top 5 alongside the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University, the University of Nottingham and the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom for the number of applications received.Leeds had an income of £706.2 million in 2017/18, of which £137.1 million was from research grants and contracts. The university has financial endowments of £77.2 million (2017–18), ranking outside the top ten British universities by financial endowment.

Admission


Entry requirements

We will normally consider qualifications from all over the world.

We tend to refer to entry requirements in terms of standard British qualifications (A-levels, or a 'good honours degree'). However, admissions tutors at Leeds are familiar with international qualifications and welcome applications from students with equivalent qualifications. If you consider yourself to be a good student within your own educational system, then it is likely there will be an appropriate entry point for you in Leeds. English language requirements

If English is not your first language, you will need a recognised English Language qualification to be admitted onto any of the University's degree programmes.

Undergraduate study

Acceptable minimum qualifications include:

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) an overall band of 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in each component skill

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) of 87 (with no less than 20 in listening, 20 in reading, 22 in speaking and 21 in writing)

Pearson (Academic) of 60 overall with no less than 56 in any component

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE), or C1 Advanced, of 169 overall with no less than 162 in any component

Trinity College Integrated Skills in English of a Pass in ISE II or above (if taken in the UK)

GCSE English Language or Cambridge IGCSE English as a First or Second Language at grade C

Postgraduate taught study

Acceptable minimum qualifications include:

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) an overall band of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in each component skill

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) of 92 with no less than 21 in listening, 21 in reading, 23 in speaking and 22 in writing

Pearson (Academic) of 64 overall with no less than 60 in any component

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE), or C1 Advanced, of 176 overall with no less than 169 in any component

Trinity College Integrated Skills in English of a Pass in ISE II or above (if taken in the UK)

GCSE English Language or Cambridge IGCSE English as a First or Second Language at grade C

Postgraduate research study

Acceptable minimum qualifications include:

Research degree candidates normally hold a first-class or second-class honours degree, or equivalent qualification, in a subject relevant to their proposed field of research. Candidates whose first language is not English must provide evidence that their English language is sufficient to meet the specific demands of their study.

Please note that we are able to accept all of the above English language qualifications for entry to undergraduate and postgraduate study, including IELTS from both Secure English Language Test (SELT) and non-SELT test centres. However for entry to programmes below degree level (including the International Foundation Year and pre-sessional programmes) we are only able to accept English language qualifications which are listed as UKVI approved SELTs and taken in approved test centres.

Accommodation


Living in University accommodation is a great way to experience student life, make new friends and feel part of our student community. They have an impressive range of accommodation from modern, purpose-built apartments to converted mansions both on and off campus.

They understand how important your accommodation is when you're new. We know starting at University might be the first time you've lived away from home and this can be daunting as well as exciting. They are committed to making that transition as easy as possible for you and we'll help you every step of the way.  

They provide over seven thousand undergraduates with accommodation every year. The majority of students are guaranteed a place in our accommodation.

We guarantee you University accommodation if you apply by the deadlines and you are:

a new 1st year undergraduate and not coming to Leeds through clearing

an undergraduate exchange student

an international undergraduate – paying tuition fees at the international rate

Clearing students

If you are coming to Leeds through clearing you can apply for accommodation two days after you have accepted your clearing offer through UCAS. You are not guaranteed a place in a University residence, but we are confident we'll be able to help you find accommodation. We won't be able to allocate your accommodation until late August/early September and you will hear from us by Monday 10 September 2018.

One semester exchange students

If you are coming to Leeds for one semester only, you will be given a shortened accommodation contract for either September - January (Semester 1 students) or January - July (Semester 2 students).

International Foundation Year students

As an international student, you are guaranteed accommodation as long as you apply by the deadline. You can apply for accommodation once you have accepted your offer on your online account. You'll then need to visit the Accommodation Portal to complete the online application. You'll need your Leeds student ID to apply, which can be found on your offer letter.

Pre-sessional English Language course students

Families

If you are coming to Leeds with your partner or children, we have some family accommodation close to the University but places are limited. Read Family accommodation.

They have residences just for postgraduate and mature students, located close to campus and the city centre. Many postgraduate students also consider living in private accommodation across Leeds.

If you are relocating to Leeds with your family we have accommodation on campus and nearby, or you may want to live in private housing. Come early and arrange accommodation before your family arrives.
