Accommodation

Deciding where to live is a key decision when you move to Melbourne. We can help you find your new home away from home.
Students under 18 years of age : International students under 18 years of age can only live in approved accommodation as a condition of their student visa. Check the special requirments and find lists of approved providers of accomodation and welfare for students under 18 years of age.

RMIT’s Student Support Advisors can help you to find short-term or temporary accommodation for when you first arrive as well as somwhere to live long term. They can help you whether you are coming alone or are going to be living with your family. They can help you decide which suburb you want to live in, find affordable, safe and appropriate housing, and provide information about renting and tenancy agreements. When choosing accommodation, you will need to consider travel time and transport to campus. Discover the closest suburbs to your campus and the transport available to you to get to university. There are also different accommodation options to think about, like sharehousing, homestay or student apartments for example.
Homestay
Homestay or “full board” accommodation is is a good choice if you want to experience living in an Australian home, reduce set-up costs and improve your English.
Families (or sometimes a couple or single person) offer you a room in their home as well as all your meals. All homestay accommodation for international students is thoroughly screened to ensure it is a suitable living environment for students.
Booking your homestay
RMIT International works with Student Accommodation Services Pty Ltd (SAS) to provide international students with homestay placement services.
  • Once you have accepted your offer, received your student visa and booked your flight to Melbourne you can make a homestay request with SAS online.
  • Your booking needs to be made at least 10 working days prior to your arrival in Melbourne.
  • You must stay at least four weeks at the homestay.
Homestay placement fee
A homestay placement fee AU$280 must be paid when you apply for homestay.

Shared or private rental
You can rent or ‘lease’ a property by yourself or share with friends. This can be organised through a real estate agent or directly through a landlord. The benefit of shared accommodation is reduced living and set-up expenses. It is also a great way to make new friends and is the most popular accommodation choice for Australian students.
Approximate weekly costs for a student living in shared accommodation are: AUD $120 – $250.

Student apartments
Living in student accommodation gives you security and your family back home peace of mind. Student apartments can also reduce travel costs and are a great way to meet other students.
Residency fees vary according to your preferences, so you will need to do some research and compare costs. To get you started, we have listed some options that are popular with RMIT students below.
RMIT Village :RMIT Village is a five-minute tram ride from the city campus and offers a great student community. It includes internet access, fully furnished apartments, outdoor heated pool, on-site gym, and a lounge and courtyard area.
UniLodge : UniLodge properties in Melbourne’s central business district are safe and friendly. Accommodation is in central and convenient locations close to RMIT, with public transport, shops and cafés on your doorstep.
Bundoora on-campus accommodation :UniLodge @ RMIT Bundoora offers 370 beds for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The accommodation is first class and there are a variety of studio apartments to choose from as well as large two, three and four bedroom shared apartments.
