Overall Rating :

The University of Melbourne is the leading centre of higher education and research in Australia. It’s located in Parkville on the fringe of Melbourne’s central business district.

Founded in 1853, the University has consistently been among leading world universities in independent rankings. This is due to the University’s strong research performance, excellence in learning and teaching, and intellectual and social capital.

The University is ranked number one in Australia and 33 in the world in the Times Higher Education World University rankings (2015–2016).

Melbourne offers undergraduate degrees in nearly 100 major fields of study, as well as over 270 graduate courses available through 18 graduate schools to more than 45,000 students annually. It has one of the largest cohorts of graduate researchers in Australia with more than 15,000 PhD, research doctorate, masters by research and postgraduate coursework candidates.

Research achievements

The University of Melbourne’s researchers are at the forefront of international scholarship in fields as diverse as human rights law, telecommunications, climate change and medical research. Melbourne scholars of particular international renown include Nobel Laureate Professor Peter Doherty and alumna and Nobel Laureate Professor Elizabeth Blackburn.

The University has long been engaged in world-changing projects including the cochlear implant (or Bionic Ear) developed at the University’s Department of Otolaryngology.

Today, University researchers are intimately involved in the multi-disciplinary and highly collaborative efforts to develop the first Bionic Eye. Yielding impact through research partnerships, the University’s strong links with industry are epitomised by the co-location on campus of multinationals such as IBM and CSL.

Contributing to arts and culture

The University of Melbourne contributes to Australia’s cultural landscape through programs such as the Melbourne Theatre Company, Melbourne University Publishing, the Ian Potter Museum of Art and Asialink.

The University’s impressive range of museums and galleries explores everything from contemporary art, classics and archaeology, medical and dental history, to music and the sciences.

Accommodation

Colleges and accommodation
Residential colleges
The University of Melbourne has 11 residential colleges that are an ideal accommodation option if you are not from Melbourne. Living at a residential college can provide a fast way to build an academic and social network. The colleges provide sporting and cultural programs to enrich your academic experience in a thriving, warm and supportive community. All the colleges have fees but there are also accommodation scholarships available.

Other accommodation
Around the campus are the suburbs of Parkville, Carlton, North Melbourne and Brunswick. All of them are a very short distance away by public transport. You might choose to live in one of the many "share houses" in one of these suburbs, with other students. Not only can you save money on rent and bills, you also enjoy an atmosphere of student living with like-minded people.
If you are not sure where to find accommodation, the Student Housing Service can help you find and maintain affordable, safe and appropriate housing including short-term temporary accommodation if you're arriving from interstate or overseas.
